Volunteers are a vital part of Grant County Hospice services. Volunteers make it possible for Grant County Hospice to continue to provide exceptional end-of-life care, easing the pain of terminally ill people and providing support and bereavement recovery services to families and friends. Grant County Hospice has made a profound difference in the lives of countless people in our community, bringing compassion and caring to people when they need it most.
It has been Grant County Hospice’s privilege to be a source of compassion and comfort for over 30 years now, reaching out to all who need us, regardless of their ability to pay. Volunteers are a significant part of “The Heart of Caring.”
Who is a Grant County Hospice volunteer?
Types of volunteers: in home volunteer, office volunteer, bereavement volunteer and event volunteer.
Grant County Hospice volunteers are:
- A key part of the care team, working with the professional staff to enhance the quality of life for both patients and families;
- Caring people who bring their own special attributes and skills to the work done by the Grant County Hospice; and
- Friendly listeners, compassionate helpers and loving hands.
Grant County Hospice volunteers serve by:
- Providing emotional support to patients and caregivers
- Providing respite for caregivers
- Reading, writing letters, providing conversation or silent companionship
- Helping with meal preparation and other light housekeeping chores
- Providing massage (if licensed in Wisconsin)
- Bringing registered therapy pets to visit patients
- Working “behind the scenes” in the Grant County Hospice office
- Offering bereavement support for children and adults
Volunteer Training:
Grant County Hospice provides a comprehensive volunteer training that qualifies you to become a Grant County Hospice volunteer and part of the hospice team. You will gain an understanding of the death and dying process and insight into grief and bereavement.
Whether you currently work with grief and loss or desire the opportunity to learn more about how people grieve, this training will help you to work effectively with terminally ill and grieving people. The social worker will conduct the training, as well as experienced hospice staff and volunteers.
As part of our strong commitment to the communities we serve, training is free and offered at various times throughout the year.
